“These are the proverbs of Solomon, David’s son, king of Israel. Their purpose is to teach people wisdom and discipline, to help them understand the insights of the wise. Their purpose is to teach people to live disciplined and successful lives, to help them do what is right, just, and fair. These proverbs will give insight to the simple, knowledge and discernment to the young. Let the wise listen to these proverbs and become even wiser. Let those with understanding receive guidance by exploring the meaning in these proverbs and parables, the words of the wise and their riddles.” - Proverbs 1:1-6 The book of Proverbs is a fascinating entry in the wisdom literature section of the Bible and really a perfect pair with the psalms that come before it. King Solomon, whom we’ve talked a lot about in the episodes on Kings and Chronicles, was offered by God to have anything he wanted. Solomon asked for wisdom, which pleased God, and he was granted supernatural wisdom. Proverbs is a part of that outpouring. Proverbs is unlike any other book in the Bible in that it is largely made up of a collection of phrases or wise sayings; it’s not narratively-based like most books and it’s not even a larger collection of poems or songs like the psalms. So how should we read Proverbs and how can we best learn from the wisdom in this book? To help us navigate the book of Proverbs is Dr. Christopher Ansberry, associate professor of biblical and religious studies at Grove City College and author or a brand new commentary on Proverbs.
