Join us for week 1 of our series on Shema, the prayer that Jesus himself likely prayed as a child. — When asked which commandment was greatest, Jesus responds with a child’s first prayer—the Shema. This prayer is based in Deuteronomy 6:4-5, in which Israel is commanded to love the Lord their God with everything in them. This kind of whole-hearted love requires me to submit every part of myself to God—not just everything except my anger, or my addiction, or my fear, or what I eat and drink. To withhold any one of these parts would make love occasional. But love was never meant to be an occasional act.
